How the projection works

Each month we take last month's MRR, apply expansion (upsells on the existing base) and subtract churn, then add the new MRR you win. In formula terms: MRRnext = MRRnow × (1 + expansion − churn) + new MRR. The gap between expansion and churn is decisive, when expansion beats churn you have negative net churn, and your existing customers grow revenue even before you add anyone new.

Worked example: 12 months from $50K MRR

A company at $50,000 MRR that wins $8,000 of new MRR a month, loses 3% to churn and gains 1.5% from expansion:

Default inputs of the calculator above. Change any input to run your own numbers.
Starting MRR$50,000
New MRR added / month$8,000
Monthly churn3%
Monthly expansion1.5%
Months to project12
Starting ARR$600,000
MRR at end$130,170
ARR at end$1,562,035
Total growth+160%
Avg net new MRR / month$6,681

Churn beats expansion by 1.5 points here, so the base shrinks 1.5% a month on its own and all the growth comes from new sales.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate MRR?
Add up the monthly recurring charges of every active subscription, with annual plans divided by 12. Equivalently, MRR = number of paying customers × average revenue per account. See what is MRR.
What formula does this MRR growth forecast use?
Each month: MRR next = MRR now × (1 + expansion − churn) + new MRR. Expansion and churn apply to the existing base; new MRR is added on top.
How do you convert MRR to ARR?
Multiply MRR by 12. At the default inputs, $50,000 of starting MRR is $600,000 of ARR, and the projected $130,170 of MRR after 12 months is $1,562,035 of ARR. More in ARR explained.
What is net new MRR?
New MRR plus expansion MRR minus churned (and contracted) MRR in a month. The calculator shows its average over the projection as Avg net new MRR/mo.
How do you calculate MRR growth rate?
Month-over-month MRR growth = (this month's MRR − last month's MRR) ÷ last month's MRR. Total growth over the projection here is (ending MRR − starting MRR) ÷ starting MRR.
Can I use this as a revenue forecast template?
It is a quick what-if for recurring revenue. For a full forecast with pipeline, pricing and several methods side by side, see revenue forecasting.
